Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there. Since they replace the roots of the missing teeth, they allow for a wide range of benefits that you can’t get with dentures or dental bridges. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a multi-step process, including a surgical procedure. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we receive about post-op care.
Can I Drive Home After Dental Implant Placement?
If you were sedated during your dental implant surgery, it will take some time for you to be completely alert after you wake up. You might experience some blurred vision and lacked coordination. Because of this, you should plan for a trusted friend or family member to take you to and from your appointment. You should avoid driving or operating machinery for the first 24 hours after your surgery.
The Surgical Site Is Bleeding – What Do I Do?
It is common for there to be some bleeding at the site right after you have your implants placed. That can occur from 48 to 72 hours following surgery. Bite down firmly on the gauze sponges that have been placed to reduce bleeding. Avoid spitting and rinsing because this can aggravate the area, stimulating bleeding.
How Long Do I Have to Wait to Eat?
You can remove the gauze sponges and eat about an hour after your surgery. Remember to stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours, avoid hot foods and beverages, and don’t use a straw. This will give your mouth the best chance of healing properly.
Will the Recovery Be Painful?
You can expect some soreness for a few days following your procedure, especially if you had multiple implants placed. Take your prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed. If discomfort worsens after 5 to 7 days instead of improving, let your dentist know so they can help.
Why Do I Need Antibiotics?
Dental implant placement surgery requires antibiotic treatment. They are used to prevent infections around the implant and/or bone graft. You should follow dosage directions on the bottle and take the medication until it is finished.
After your dental implant placement surgery, closely follow the instructions from your oral surgeon. You will be showing off a beautiful, complete smile in just a matter of time!
