Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance is designed with preventive care in mind. Unlike medical insurance, which focuses more on reactive care and treating problems after they’ve already occurred, dental insurance carriers want patients to be proactive about reducing their risks of future issues. This is why preventive dental care is largely covered. However, should restorative dentistry be necessary, you can expect your insurance carrier to pay a portion of the cost.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Our dental team will need to review your policy to fully understand what your insurance plan covers; however, most follow a similar framework:

  • 100% preventive dental care (i.e., dental checkups, teeth cleanings, X-rays)
  • 70-80% basic restorative dental care (i.e., dental fillings)
  • 50% major restorative dental care (i.e., root canals, dental crowns)

Cosmetic dental treatments are typically not covered because they are deemed “elective” by most dental insurance companies. Also, you may have coverage for orthodontic treatment, but you’ll need to review the existing terms to make sure you and your loved ones won’t be required to pay the full amount out of pocket.
