Smiling is a natural part of life that makes just about every situation more enjoyable. However, if you are missing one or more teeth, smiling with confidence is a constant challenge. We are dedicated to helping you fill in the gaps left by missing teeth with restorative dental bridges in our Vero Beach, FL office. What Is a Dental Bridge? How Does It Replace Missing Teeth?
A dental bridge is a device that fills the space left behind by a missing tooth with a natural-looking replacement tooth. The device consists of an artificial tooth that is sandwiched between two dental crowns or dental implants. The surrounding teeth are referred to as abutment teeth, while the replacement tooth is called a pontic. Pontics are made of porcelain, alloys, gold, or other materials. Porcelain is the preferred material, as it most closely resembles the color of your natural teeth. There are various kinds of dental bridges, but the one we just described is the most common.
How Does a Traditional Dental Bridge Procedure Work?
At your initial appointment, Dr. Cromer will prepare and shape the teeth on either side of the gap to hold the crown in place, and then take an impression, or image, of the area. Cromer and Cairns Dental will then send the impression (or image) off to a lab so that a technician can construct a custom device. In the meantime, our dentist will install temporary crowns to protect your prepared teeth. When the dental bridge is finished, Dr. Cromer will fit, adjust, and cement the bridge onto the prepared teeth. It takes at least two dental visits to get fitted for a dental bridge at our Vero Beach practice. The cost of a dental bridge varies according to the number of teeth needing to be replaced and their location in your mouth, which impacts the complexity of the procedure. Patients with other dental issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease, will usually need to have these treated first.
Benefits Our Patients Enjoy from Dental Bridges
Are you curious about how your life will change after getting fitted for a dental bridge at our Vero Beach dental office? Here are a few benefits you have to look forward to after the procedure:
- A restored smile without gaps or missing teeth
- Restored ability to chew and speak normally
- Alleviated jaw pain/less stress on your teeth
- No more shifting teeth, which cause bite issues
- Reduced risk of jawbone loss/restored facial shape
Dental Bridges vs. Dental Implants: Which Is Right for Me?
Dental bridges are not your only restorative option at Cromer and Cairns Dental. We also provide dental implants to replace missing teeth. Both procedures have pros and cons that must be weighed carefully by each patient. While dental implants are a permanent solution that provides support to the rest of your natural teeth, the implant procedure tends to be a little more invasive and expensive. Dental bridges generally require fewer appointments and are a better option for patients who have already experienced significant jawbone loss. However, a replacement may eventually be necessary for your dental bridge, as they typically last anywhere from 5-15 years depending on how well you take care of them. Our Vero Beach dentists would be happy to discuss either restorative dental procedure with you in greater detail when you come in for a consultation. We strive to help you make an informed decision.
